Weddings!

I helped out at a Wedding Expo at the Log Cabin in Penrith today. I never thought a location on the Nepean River could actually be so nice.
Anyways, since we are also getting married soon, I thought I'd have a look around the displays. The Log Cabin themselves were advertising their own venue for the special day, however, have invited many other associated services such as vintage car hires, photographers, cake supplies, balloon decorations, travel agent, make up artists, hair stylists and jewellery designers along so that the clients can look at the variety of things that they can have on their big day.
One of the main reasons we are marrying overseas is that a wedding package in a resort in Bali or Vanuatu or Fiji for example, cost less than what I've seen with other people's weddings. We only really wanted simple things, and wanted a small one so it didn't bother us that we don't have a formal photographer, that I am not wearing a proper 'bridal' dress, and that we don't have all the glamour that normally would go with a wedding.
And so just out of curiosity, I went around and checked out the prices of even just the simple stuff....
A photographer is charging around $450 for a 3 hour session, this is just for taking photos only. If you wanted to purchase the photos it's extra. A wedding cake can cost from $100 to $1000 depends on how fancy you want it to be. Flowers are extremely expensive considering they die in about 2 days and the actual reception, basing on what the Log Cabin is charging (which I believe is one of the cheapest in Sydney for the amount of inclusions) starts at $69 per person, and you have to have a minimum of 60 guests.
And then you have to have a celebrant. I overheard one saying the charge is $300 for the day (which the ceremony last at the most an hour?) and then $100 per rehearsal of planning time before hand.
Wow. Weddings are big business aren't they? The cheapest you can do from the above (basing on 60 people) would be $5000. That's our ceremony and honeymoon together including flights.
But then again, it's all beautiful and glamourous, and I guess if I had the money I probably would choose something nice too. After all, isn't it every girl's dream to be a princess for the day?

I think I am still happy with my Vanuatu decision. 2 more months to go!

I think your wedding plan is lovely, Amy. You should do what you want -- and not succumb to (peer/family) pressure

I wanted to elope too, but Will being the only boy in the family and I being the eldest and first to marry, we eventually thought having a wedding for the parents would be nice. But put our foot down when they wanted to butt in about the details and just decided to make it easier for everyone by having it overseas
