Fate - do you believe it?

As you do, when there is nothing much to do, and not much is on tv to keep us entertained, you start chatting about odd and useless things here and there. Since we are still waiting for the unit to settle, waiting for the prices to become available for our wedding next year, and having nothing further to do about any of these things, we started talking about how people meet.
We were saying how Will wasn't actually planning to go to Peru (where we met) and was going to go to Kenya instead in 2006. I had already booked and paid for the trip to Peru out of rash decisions as I got a bit fed up with normality at the time. We were never going to cross paths, until Will's program to Kenya got cancelled in the last minute and he was placed on the Peru program instead, the program I was going on. So we met.
And then you hear other people's stories, sometimes not about relationships, but other things like a long lost high school friend whom you happen to come across in a foreign city on the other side of the world, and you find out you actually work for the same global company just in a different office, and you end up being best friends forever, etc.
And then I don't remember which novel it was, but it pretty much went about a story how a guy tried to avoid death, and was given many a chance to re-live his experiences only to die from a different cause because as his time was up, it was up, no matter how he dies.
It's all part of fate isn't it? Part of how each of our lives are written? Funnily enough reminds me of the other movie I saw about this guy who's live is controlled by this author writing a book at the same time about the life of a guy, and she changed the ending in the last minute when she found out that her writing was actually coming to life controlling a real human being... sometimes it does make you wonder if there is something writing all our stories, knowing exactly who we are going to meet what we are going to do and when we are going to pass away?
If any of you remember the title of the book and the movie please tell me....
Sorry, feeling very philosophical today.. only because I saw this news report:
Woman who missed the doomed Air France plane dies in car crash
Any theories?
