When you finally feel like you belong...
June 19th 2008 11:22
You know that outsider feeling you get when you have just moved into somewhere completely new and into a job where you knew no one, and each day you just don't feel like yourself, and you are just a little particle floating around in a big fish tank waiting to be scooped out?
And then, come a day when suddenly, you have friends, people start saying hi to you, people start telling you about their day and ask how you day has been, and it's like suddenly, you are part of that school of fish.
It feels good.
Well, this week is the first week since moving up to Coffs that I've spent the entire week in the shop. Things are starting to come together and I am starting to get a lot better at my job. The past two days had been extremely great with real customers and real bookings and even have been able to use my language skills to help someone with booking their holidays. As it turns out this someone also works at the local take away and when I went there for lunch, it was nice to be greeted with "Hi Amy! Nice to see you!" and then at the local coffee shop where I get my morning mocha, they are starting to remember my orders and I now classify as a regular.
That's when you know you finally belong, and things can only get better from here.
Work is getting better. I struggle less and are becoming a lot more confident. While my performance in terms of sales is still down below the average line, but hey, it's only my third week! I think what makes a difference to make or break in a new job are the people whom you work with. Luckily, the entire store is behind me, supporting me and have been so helpful that I am able to learn a lot from just being around them. My fellow newbies in other stores, especially those in stores in the Sydney city, says that because they are so busy and city people are just so impatient, that their team just stopped helping them because they don't want to spend the time *not* making money.
Isn't it funny how circumstances change people? I am sure everyone means well but when given too much pressure, they simply turn nasty to protect themselves.
And I am just glad I am so lucky
I am starting to miss the little fluff ball though. I miss having Kitty running around the house, but then again, I am probably just feeling it a little more because my better half is not here to cook for me.....
