About that pre-nuptials thing....

August 17th 2008 02:12
Just flipping through the sunday paper, there is a short trashy report on celebrity pre-nuptials that made me laugh. Instead of things about how to split the fortunes should they ever seperate, or whether the house belongs to the man or the women, they are includings the following things:

- Division of cooking responsibilities
- Agreement on the acceptable level of takeaways and any vetoed cuisine
- Partners should maintain the same weight
- Cleaning responsiblities: washing up, cleaning the toilet, outdoor tasks, taking out the garbage and walking the dog
- Whether pets are allowed
- Amount of money each partner can spend on treating themselves
- Number of 'dates' the couple go on each month
- Sharing of designated driver responsibilities
- Number of holidays
- Amoung each put into joint bank account

(Source: The Sunday Telegraph 17 August 2008)

Sounds rather immature doesn't it? I mean, if you don't already share these responsibilities while you are dating, or if you KNOW that someone isn't going to do the above that seems important to you, why would you want to marry them in the first place?

I find this point laughable: Partners should maintain the same weight. Righto. Weight is not a major problem but I'd rather health to be included. If a partner has gained some weight because they are getting healthier and perhaps a bit more toned (because as we all know, muscle weighs more than fat) then according to this clause, they are to be divorced.

To me, pre-nuptials are a load of cat litter. Ok so it's probably important to know how much belongs to who if you are both power couple like most of the celebrities are, and to sign it to protect your fortunes but little things like 'taking out the rubbish'?

We have sort of a pre-nuptial agreement, there there is only two things on it: To main the same responsibilities we are both taking on at the moment after marriage; and that we get 2 weeks annual leave from each other if we wish to take it. Everyone needs their own space, and we thought we'd just put that in

Not that anything is formally signed, I think in a relationship a general verbal agreement should be enough if your relationship is genuine and trusting.

It's getting a bit beyond the pale when pre-nups are used for anything other than protecting assets.
