One of many difficult challenges facing lovers: moving house

February 18th 2008 10:46
Today, we've finally completed our move. From the fridge to the washing machine to my 20 boxes of books have all been moved into storage: my parent's garage, until we find a place up in Coffs Harbour. Thanks to friends and family who came around with their utes and vans our move was relatively painless and smooth.

Moving houses together will have to be one of the most challenging tasks a couple have to face together. It's an event requiring tremendous team work and often ends in arguments and tears. Thankfully, team work is one of our fortes in our relationship, and besides a couple of tears shed (by me, from exhausting and frustration by cleaning all day) we passed the challenge satisfactorily.

Will and I met while working on a volunteer project in Peru, (apologies, I may have mentioned it quite a few times already!) and before we officially fancied each other, we were all put into team exercises and bonding sessions to make sure when we perform our tasks at the communities, we are able to all work together, a foundational skill both of us now cherish.

It was however, still no easy task. We both have, at one point expressed our frustration with the grease stains on the kitchen walls and how much work there is still to do. It was already three in the afternoon and still, we had the floors to mop as well. However, both knowing crying, yelling and arguments will not help us clean faster, so a couple of deep breaths later, we were back at it.

I admit I did have a fit when we still found out that we left both of our cameras in the house, hanging behind the door of the study. We both thought the other had packed it, and we both had a go at each other. However, an agreement that I'll go pick it up tomorrow settled it, although I still do insist I am doing more of the hard work because I am the only one that drives and I need to get back to work tomorrow, which means, either it was going to be him who planned to rest (as he is officially now an unemployed student bum) but needing to catch an hour of public transport to get there, or I try to get out at lunch time to drive over in 40 mins to get them... So he has promised me a good roast meal when I visit him in Coffs in Easter.

I know couples have almost split up trying to move, so considering that record, I thought we did pretty well.
Any of you have any horror stories of such to tell? How do you manage team work in your relationship/household?
