eMail order brides?

July 19th 2008 12:28
I know it's been going on for ages, but what astonish me is that many still do have 'mail order' life partners.

A guy call the shop last week, wanting to book a return flight to Thailand. While I advised him that I need a few minutes to look this up, he felt like chatting and chatted away. He told me that he was going to Thailand to meet this girl. She is beautiful and he wants to marry her.

Of course, alarm bells went all over my head but it's not my job to give relationship advise to my clients so I continued listening instead. He said that he would like to book a nice resort on the beach so they can spend sometime to get to know each other. Obviously they have never met and how he knew she was truly beautiful I have no idea. He is probably past mid-age and felt genuinely nice, and knowing the asian bride "market" I felt sorry for him. It'll be good if this bride really did want to marry him for the rest of her life but statistics say it's highly unlikely. They are likely to have a child of their own which they'll drag with them here, they'll be happy for a little while until the wife gets citizenship then she'll find an excuse to divorce him. Just myself I personally know two people that it happened to....

I am not judging anyone here. I just don't understand how you can determine to spend the rest of your life with someone you have only been chatting to, without having spent some physical time together? We see relationship issues around us all the time even to people who have been living together for a year or two, so what is the drive behind these people who can risk it all and pick a wife out of a catelogue?

Is it because they are naiive? Is it because they are lonely? Well, the second is not likely because I know this man lives with his mother and his son. So surely he is not lonely. Naiive maybe, but isn't there enough news coverage and other things you hear about people that make you at least doubt such easy transactions?

Love the cartoon, Amy.

Generally HE is a loser, is dead set ugly, or has 'baggage': after all there are plenty of females out here.

She is usually considerably younger and he mistakenly believes Asian women are feminine and will do as they are told, be sweet, loving, innocent and not be liberated. He is usually wrong in his expectations.

But sometimes it works but generally when they meet their partner out here.

It's the exploiting and the exploited, and sometimes it is difficult to know just which one is which.

Sad, isn't it?

I'm just glad I don't want a bride, let alone one from a catalogue, ( psst, do they have any 'wealthy men' - just kidding )

Katyzzz - I read in an article somewhere that there is actually an agency that "matches" single woman with really wealthy man that can't be bothered or have time for socialising. It's true!

I was just kidding, Amy, they say if you marry for money you spend the rest of your life paying for it, and I can't help thinking they really do not have someone like me in mind.

No time for dating, no time for love, what's in the future, just tell me, my love.

A lot of western men (regardless of age, looks, wealth etc) go to Asia to find a bride. I know your story is talking about online matches but it's still the same principal. The reason is because they are losers in their own country who are jaded and have 'baggage' from past relationships and generally speaking Asian females (or just asian people) look up to white people, esp. if they are male and wealthy.

So they go from Mr Loser to Mr Egotistical I'm-so-great whilst they are in Asia and of course all the gold digging whores are after them for their money...

what's so hard to understand?

Katyzzz - Dunno. If they don't have time for anything then I don't know what to suggest.

Anonymous - haha true.

I agree with anonymous. What i do hate though is that sometimes asians are stereotyped as such... most especially those coming from SouthEast Asia.

Sad, but I know all these things to be true -- just that it's a very small percentage of the whole population. Contrary to what movies or articles would portray them.

lol, i'm obviously from SouthEast Asia... with all the defensive shield hahah

but i know it's true, it happens, it sucks

Hazel - we all don't like stereotyping but sometimes when you see it everywhere you kind of wonder.... It's the same thing as stereotyping old single men going to Thailand for only one thing, but we know it happens and it does suck!

I agree with Anonymous. I am disappointed that so many of my kababayan respect (without question) these white male losers that come to the Philippines for Filipina women. In their own country these men are regarded as losers but generally respected in the Philippines.

Be informed that most Filipinas are NOT gold diggers. It's only a very small number that give a bad name to Filipino women in general. If they can't get a 'green card' they would still be happy if their loser husband got them a house and businesses in the Philippines instead. Of course the foreigner can not own property in the Philippines so everything goes under the name of his wife. Then once the businesses are prosperous she doesn't need the loser anymore, so she leaves him and keeps the house and businesses.
