Why is it that we love celebrities so much?

Ok like this is my little call to fame - well, close to fame anyway. I have arrived in Melbourne today for work for the next two weeks. Yep, my very last corporate business trip for a while. Anyway focus is not on me today - it's on... the Logis.
Now, for someone who doesn't usually watch tv, I didn't know. Seriously. I don't usually follow these things and so as my taxi turned the corner toward the front of my hotel, I saw flash lights, bright spot lights and hear the faint scream in the distance.
"Is something happening today?" I asked.
The taxi driver shrugged. Apparently he didn't care either.
I am staying at the Crown Promenade. And guess where the Logis are being held? The Crown. Yep. So the taxi pulls up on the driveway, already lined up with beautiful limousines waiting for their stars. Still, I had no idea. I struggle with my luggage a little and with a concierge's help, finally stumbles across the floor to the reception (while eyeing at all the beautiful a-list looking people hovering around the lobby)
"What's happening?" I asked the receptionist, who was busy putting $1900 on my credit card (thank god work is paying for it)
"Oh, the Logis," She looked at me and smiled.
The Logis? And here I am, looking like a peasant in the city, surrounded by all the red carpet glamour... suddenly I felt really intimidated.
Wait - is that Kate Ritchie? Hey cool - I am staying in the same hotel as Kate Ritchie! At least that's a name I know.
See, even though I am not a fan, I am thrill by the fact that I am staying in the hotel where a lot of the important people are also staying at. What is it about celebrities that we love? I mean - they are really just people doing their jobs right? They still have to get up, get ready and get in front of the camera/microphone to make a living, just like we get up, get ready and go to work. What makes it that they become camera magnets?
