Names are not important until they go so wrong!
April 23rd 2010 11:36
Came across this article today, gave me a bit of chuckle at work:
Talula Does the Hula
In short - someone named their child 'Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii' and is getting in trouble with the law.
We've been talking about names, Will and I. Not that we are expecting anything yet, but you know, perhaps one day we may just. But talking nevertheless, about our favourite names to reserve for future use.
So, the names we are both happy with, are Mia for a girl, and Christian for a boy.
Who knows if we'll ever end up using these names, but a friend of mine (who has a tendency to think too much into theory, having been an academic all her life...) supposedly 'warned' us that we shouldn't follow the craze of people trying to be cool and popular by naming their children names of celebrity's children.
Well, before she even mentioned that, I didn't even think about it. Apparently Mia had been the most popular name since Lleyton and Becs had their daughter, and Christian is one of the popular ones among young parents after the Danish royal prince-let, son of 'our' Princess Mary.
You know what? I am not going to NOT name my child (if I had one) something I really like just because I think it's un-cool? I mean, that's just the same attitude of those who DO name their children names that are popular but in reverse. How stupid. If I like the name, I like the name. Not because it's a popular celebrity kid's name.
So, going back to the article... as an example - IF, this Talula-Hawaii name was the daughter of a famous celebrity, I wouldn't be naming my child that name just to follow someone's footsteps. Same goes to names like 'Cruz' and 'Peaches' and 'Sunday Rose'.
Yes, Shakespeare did say: "What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet." - but if you are going to name your child 'Number 16 Bus Shelter' (re: article) - you won't get much of a rose but a pansy.
What are they thinking???

Of course everyone will choose a name because they like that name - who doesn't? I've never actually heard anyone admit that they named their kid after a celebrity, but somehow Mia shot to no. 1 and then Isabella shot to no. 1 (Princess Mary's daughter). Maybe our increasing exposure to such names has an effect on our sub-conscious after always hearing it mentioned in positive references. If a Mia or Isabella became an infamous serial killer I doubt parents would be so quick to choose those names, despite liking them.
Does the name Nirvana make you think about Kurt Cobain blowing his brains out? Maybe not everyone would, but parents beware!
Really Long Link
All I'm saying is that you've got to be prepared for the associations that people make, and they WILL make them. Research from Germany has shown that teachers actually treat their students differently depending on their names, i.e. they had a more positive attitude to kids with normal, traditional names and negative attitudes to kids with trendy, celebrity-like names.

I know what you are saying. I am not saying it's the wrong way of seeing things... But you know what? We all get treated differently based on our race/gender/looks/body shape. We all deny it, but it happens. I mean, truthfully we all do it too, just some more blatantly than others. So whether it's based on your name or not, one way or the other, someone is going to discriminate against somebody, so why bother even giving so much thought into it in the first place?
As long as it's not too out there, not too weird (even 'weird' is subjective) and that you actually like it... then who cares?

I agree with you about not avoiding names just because they're popular, with celebrities or otherwise... connotations will change immensely over the child's life and so choosing one that both parents like is more important than avoiding popular names. My two favourite boys' names are William and Jack - they also happen to be right at the top of the popular list, but I won't not choose them for my future sons just because of this fact. I say, if you like it, then go for it!
