Scarred by childhood memories...

Over lunch with a friend we chatted about a mutual friend of ours who is having problems with the concept of marriage.
She is in a really stable and good relationship but is afraid, or rather, have an issue with the idea of marriage because of her childhood memories about her parent's divorce, and later with her father's suicide. She is seeing a psychiatrist about it, and is slowly recover from her fears but still has a lot of uncertainty about the future and about marriage life / relationship in general.
Childhood memories seem to affect who we are as adults and I can understand why she would feel this way (knowing a lot about her parents and their relationship)
I think a lot of people have issues from their past, and I think when it comes to relationships we all tend to want to learn from our past mistakes. Not necessary as scarred by our own past as my friend is of her parents but still, it certainly does make you think twice.
Remember I mentioned the guy I met on the internet, who had a failed marriage and was just all f*ed up about relationships which made him act like an a$$hole?
Have you had similar experiences? What made you overcome the fear or issues with relationships?
