Carpet Love...
August 10th 2007 16:20
Once or twice when i was younger, my mother called me Carpet. I thought it was strange at the time, and even now, as she gave me the name David at birth. She was there when i came into this world, I thought she'd remember my real name. I presume as so many of my friends at Highschool called me Carpet, it just became normal for her to understand me as that. Never once did she ask about the origins of my name though.I think she might have been scared to.
Anyway College followed suit, and with my increasingly beautiful hair and charming personality, 'Carpet' became my name. Now i'm at Uni, only one or two people call me Carpet, and its strange. Woody is the only one i think, but he also calls me Davey...which is nice.
Nevertheless, my MSN name is usually Carpet and on myspace it has more or less always been my screen name, and so many ask me why. A few months ago i got asked about it three times in one day by different people, so i thought i'd put an end to the retelling and write it down. I'll admit now, telling the story online is boring enough, but telling it in person is something else. I think a girl lost interest in me after i told her about how my name came about. I've tended not to use the nickname conversation in chatting up girls since. So, here it is, the official version of what i consider the origins of my nickname.
It was yr 9 of highschool and the rain was pouring. We, my class that is (Set P, where P=perfect) had PE. Instead of us getting drenched, Mr Rimmer decided we should stay inside and do work. Work, back then consisted of writing out a textbook. It wasn't fun, but i'd take textbook writing to the next level if i had the choice between that and Uni exams. The room we went to was the very old RE4. It was, however, being redecorated. The paintwork was smelly, and the carpets were part in process of being replaced.
It was my friend Lloyd who said, 'hey the Carpets have gone, Cartwright must've ate them, he's a Carpet monster...'
...
...ahem.
Thats the story. Happy now? Of course, in time the name Carpet monster got shortened to Carpet, and in one case, Car (by Mark, whos name in turn got shortened to Mar). It stuck ever since. Its a bad story i know, a boring story to a good nickname. And i do love the name Carpet, its cool and unique. Thankyou to Lloyd, and my friends who stuck with it i suppose.
And of course my mother...for calling me David.
